#8: Non-Profit Against Group

Nuclear Information and Resource Service(NIRS) is a non-profit organization that is for a nuclear-free and carbon-free future. They share information about nuclear power generation and the many risks that come with it. One of the main talking points that they express in their website is that nuclear electricity generation has a byproduct that is 100 million times more radioactive than the fuel rods that are put into the plant. The issue does not come from the fact that this byproduct is produced, but from the fact that currently we do not have a good environmentally friendly way of disposing of the byproduct. Therefore the highly radioactive waste is just sitting in the nuclear plants until we figure out a safe way to dispose of it. This could cause issues if the waste somehow were to seep into the environment radiating the area around it and causing potentially serious implications similar to a meltdown. The NIRS links recent articles describing some of the issues that they talk about on the website as well as they receive information from the World Information Service on Energy(WISE). WISE is responsible for sharing information internationally about energy safety of use and potential sources that are being pursued. They have many different campaigns that are against nuclear energy and primarily the transport of nuclear waste to facilities across the country. The reason that they oppose the transportation of this waste is because it is highly radioactive and could damage ecosystems in waterways, soils and even cities if handled improperly or in the case of an accident.(WC:262)
